India Launches #100DesiDeepTechs Initiative

India has recently launched the #100DesiDeepTechs initiative to identify and support 100 leading deep-tech startups. This multi-stakeholder programme is a collaboration between Startup Policy Forum (SPF), Startup India (DPIIT), MEITY Startup Hub, and IIT Madras. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s deep-tech ecosystem through policy dialogue and targeted support. Applications are open nationwide for startups innovating in critical technology sectors.
Purpose and Collaboration
#100DesiDeepTechs is designed to encourage a robust policy ecosystem for deep-tech startups. It brings together government bodies, academic institutions, investors, and industry leaders. The initiative supports government schemes such as the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Scheme and the Deep-Tech Fund of Funds.
Selection and Engagement Process
Startups from across India can apply to join the exclusive cohort by mid-August. Selected startups will participate in closed-door dialogues involving policymakers, investors, regulators, and research institutions. These sessions will explore sector-specific challenges and opportunities. The outcome will be a comprehensive policy whitepaper with regulatory recommendations to enhance the deep-tech landscape.
Focus Areas and Sectoral Scope
The initiative targets startups working in advanced and strategic fields. These include semiconductors, defence technologies, quantum computing, green hydrogen, space technologies, drones, electric vehicles, biotechnology, robotics, advanced manufacturing, and communication infrastructure. The broad sectoral focus aims to align innovation with national strategic priorities.
Mentorship and Strategic Guidance
A Mentor Board comprising founders, investors, policymakers, and technical experts will guide the cohort. This board will provide strategic advice, technical expertise, and access to vital networks. The mentorship aims to accelerate the growth and global competitiveness of selected startups.
Policy Impact and Future Outlook
The whitepaper resulting from the dialogues will be revealed at the Deeptech Baithak forum. This event will gather founders, investors, and policymakers to discuss the deep-tech ecosystem’s future. SPF will also launch the Centre for Deep-tech Policy Research (CDPR) to continue policy development and support. The initiative is expected to shape India’s innovation policies and market creation in deep technology.
