Sources in the Israeli defence sector confirmed that the Army and Air Force, which already operate the Heron Mk II, have placed additional orders. The Indian Navy, long dependent on older Searcher UAVs, will induct the platform for the first time, signalling a major technological transition in maritime surveillance.

Emergency Procurement and Role of UAVs in Warfare

Under emergency procurement rules, the armed forces may acquire systems worth up to ₹300 crore to meet urgent operational needs. Israeli industry officials note that drones now dominate nearly 70% of battlefield operations, ranging from frontline reconnaissance to deep-penetration missions. Their ability to penetrate hostile air defence networks and neutralise high-value targets makes them indispensable in contemporary conflict.

Capabilities of the Heron Mk II Platform

The Heron Mk II is a medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV capable of flying for over 24 hours while carrying nearly 500 kg of mission payload. Its sensor suite includes Synthetic Aperture Radar, electro-optical systems and SIGINT equipment, enabling round-the-clock intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance even in adverse conditions. Satellite communication links support fully automated take-off and landing and allow the UAV to be controlled from remote locations without line-of-sight constraints.
