India Approves 111 Road Projects Under Vibrant Villages Programme

The Government of India approved 111 road projects on 29 July 2026 for all-weather connectivity to 134 previously unconnected villages along the India-China border. The projects were sanctioned under the Vibrant Villages Programme and carry an estimated cost of ₹2,481.93 crore.

Vibrant Villages Programme

The Vibrant Villages Programme is a Central Sector scheme for developing villages in border areas of India. The Ministry of Home Affairs implements the programme for villages along the northern border, including areas near the India-China frontier.

Road Connectivity in Border Areas

Road projects in border villages are linked with year-round access, movement of goods, and delivery of public services. All-weather roads are designed for use during rain, snow, and other seasonal conditions that affect remote Himalayan terrain.

Other Components of the Programme

• The Vibrant Villages Programme has extended 4G mobile connectivity to 528 villages as of 29 July 2026.
• The programme has provided piped drinking water to 625 villages as of 29 July 2026.
• The programme has supplied electricity to 621 villages as of 29 July 2026.
• Under VVP-I, 140 off-grid solar projects and seven micro-hydel projects have been sanctioned as of 29 July 2026.

Power Infrastructure and Border Development

The Ministry of Power approved 43 projects worth ₹238.30 crore for power distribution infrastructure through convergence with the Vibrant Villages Programme. Convergence in government schemes refers to the use of multiple departmental interventions for a common development objective.
