India and Indonesia have agreed to deepen defence industrial collaboration following high-level talks in New Delhi. The engagement underscored both nations’ shared strategic concerns in the Indo-Pacific and highlighted India’s growing role as a defence manufacturing partner.

Indonesia Recognises India’s Submarine Expertise

Indonesia commended India’s experience in submarine development, particularly the Scorpene-class programme executed through technology transfer with France’s Naval Group. Six Scorpene-class submarines have entered Indian Navy service between 2017 and 2023, with three more planned. Jakarta views India’s supply-chain strengths and domestic shipbuilding capacity as valuable inputs for its own naval modernisation plans.

The two defence ministers agreed to create a joint defence industry cooperation committee. The proposed body will focus on technology transfer, joint research and development, certification harmonisation and integration of supply chains.
