Coral reefs are underwater structures built by colonial marine invertebrates called coral polyps. These polyps secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard protective skeleton. Though they occupy less than 1% of the ocean floor, they support nearly 25% of all marine life. This rich biodiversity has earned them the name rainforests of the sea.
