IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Heavy rainfall continues across several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal brings widespread showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Weather authorities have placed multiple districts under orange and yellow alerts, signalling significant rainfall risk.

Rainfall Alerts and Expected Intensity

The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rain in southern and delta districts, prompting orange alerts where rainfall may reach 11–20 cm. Yellow alerts indicate heavy rain between 6–11 cm. Officials expect the most intense spell on Monday, with rainfall gradually reducing later in the week though moderate showers may persist.

Regions Most Affected

Southern and coastal districts including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, and Tiruvarur have recorded very high rainfall in the past 24 hours. Several areas are reporting waterlogging and traffic disruption. State Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed, especially in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, to assist with emergency measures.

Impact on Daily Life and Precautionary Measures

Schools and, in some districts, colleges have been closed due to the heavy downpour. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay alert to waterlogging, strong winds, and local disaster-management advisories. Chennai is under a yellow alert with cloudy skies, light to moderate rain, and isolated thunderstorms expected.
