ICMR approves ₹2 crore grant for joint study of age-related gut-brain changes using AI
On 4 November 2026, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved a ₹2 crore grant for a joint study by Lucknow University, King George’s Medical University and SS Khanna Girls Degree College in Prayagraj. The project will examine age-related changes in gut microorganisms and their possible effects on brain function.
Study focus and research team
Researchers will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse these changes. The study aims to assess links with memory, cognitive function and neurological health, and to look for early signs of dementia and other age-related conditions. The findings are intended to inform future approaches to prevention and treatment; these are research objectives, not established outcomes.
Dr Rudra Prakash Ojha of Lucknow University’s Biochemistry Department will lead the project. Dr Raj Kamal Srivastava and Dr Sumit Rungta of King George’s Medical University, and Dr Shailendra Kumar Singh of SS Khanna Girls Degree College, will serve as co-investigators.
Important Facts for Exams
- Short-chain fatty acids: Some gut microorganisms ferment dietary fibre into short-chain fatty acids, including acetic acid and butyric acid, which the host absorbs.
- Blood–brain barrier: The gut microbiome regulates the blood–brain barrier throughout life, partly through microbial metabolites; the barrier controls substance transfer into the brain.
