Himachal Village Gets First Public Bus After 78 Years

Nearly eight decades after Independence, a remote village in Himachal Pradesh has finally been connected to the public transport network. Tumman village in the Karsog subdivision of Mandi district witnessed the arrival of its first government-run bus on December 31, 2025, marking a historic milestone in rural connectivity and infrastructure development.

Historic First Bus Service in Tumman Village

For the first time since 1947, a bus operated by the Himachal Road Transport Corporation entered Tumman village. The moment was celebrated with great enthusiasm by residents, who welcomed the bus with flower garlands, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and distribution of sweets. For locals, the event symbolised long-awaited inclusion into the mainstream transport network.

End of Long-Standing Mobility Challenges

Until now, residents of Tumman had to walk long distances or depend on private vehicles to access healthcare, education, markets, and government offices. The absence of public transport had particularly affected the elderly, women, and students. The introduction of the bus service is expected to reduce travel time and costs while improving access to emergency and essential services.

Trial Run Completed, Regular Service Expected

Officials of HRTC confirmed that a successful trial run has been conducted on the route. Tumman village is located around 15 kilometres from the Ani bus stand, and regular services are expected to commence once final administrative approvals are completed. The move follows a similar initiative in April 2023, when Talaihan village in the same subdivision received its first bus service after nearly 70 years.
