GMR Aero Technic signs Honeywell MRO licence agreement

GMR Aero Technic signed a licence agreement with Honeywell Aerospace on 28 July 2026 for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul services in Hyderabad, India. The agreement covers seven Honeywell Aerospace Line Replaceable Units installed on LEAP engines used in commercial aviation.

Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul

Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul, or MRO, is an aviation support activity that includes inspection, repair, overhaul, and restoration of aircraft components and systems. In aviation, depot-level maintenance refers to deeper repair work carried out at specialised facilities rather than at the aircraft line station.

LEAP Engines and Line Replaceable Units

LEAP is a family of turbofan engines developed by CFM International for narrow-body aircraft. The engine powers the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX, which are among the most widely used single-aisle aircraft in global airline fleets. Line Replaceable Units are modular aircraft components that can be removed and replaced quickly during maintenance.

India’s Aviation MRO Ecosystem

Hyderabad is one of India’s aviation engineering centres and hosts GMR Aero Technic’s repair infrastructure. The agreement adds in-region repair capability for LEAP engine operators in India and nearby markets. It also aligns with the Make in India initiative, which is a Government of India programme launched in 2014 to expand domestic manufacturing and technical capability.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Honeywell Aerospace is a division of Honeywell International and supplies avionics, engines, and aerospace systems.
  • Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX belong to the narrow-body commercial aircraft segment.
  • Depot-level maintenance is more complex than line maintenance and usually requires specialised tooling and facilities.
  • India has promoted domestic MRO capacity to reduce dependence on overseas aircraft maintenance hubs.

Commercial Aviation Maintenance

Commercial aviation MRO services are classified into line maintenance, base maintenance, component repair, and engine overhaul. Component MRO for LRUs is a key part of aircraft support because it helps airlines manage spare parts, service time, and fleet availability.
