Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update

Global Annual to Decadal 10-year Climate Update was released by United Kingdom’s Met Office led by World Meteorological Organisation.

Key Findings

  • According to the release, world will temporarily breach 1.5-Celsius warming mark within 2021-2025.
  • It highlights, there is 40 percent chance of annual average global temperature will surpass 1.5C above pre-industrial temperatures, the warming limit of Paris climate accord.
  • There is a 90 percent chance of one year in period of 2021-2025 being hottest on record.
  • Annual average global temperature will be at least 1C warmer than pre-industrial levels between 2021-2025.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

WMO, a specialized agency of United Nations, promote international cooperation on atmospheric science, hydrology, climatology and geophysics. WMO was originated from International Meteorological Organization to exchange weather data and research. During the World Meteorological Convention of 1947, proposals to reform status and structure IMO was proposed. This Convention came into force in 1950 after which WMO started its operations as an intergovernmental organization within United Nations.

International Meteorological Organization (IMO)

IMO was the first organization established with the objective of exchanging weather information among countries. It was formed after realizing that weather systems move across country boundaries. IMO was superseded the World Meteorological Organization in 1951.
