Gastrochilus Pechei Orchid

The recent discovery of the orchid species Gastrochilus pechei in Arunachal Pradesh has added a new member to India’s rich orchid family. Previously known only from Myanmar, this finding confirms the floristic link between the two regions. The discovery was made in Vijoynagar, a remote area bordering Myanmar, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. This event marks Arunachal Pradesh’s status as the Orchid State of India, home to about 60% of the country’s orchid varieties.

Background of Gastrochilus Pechei

Gastrochilus pechei is a species from the Gastrochilus genus, first recorded in 1825. The genus includes 77 species found across tropical, subtropical, and temperate Asia. These orchids have a monopodial growth pattern and are noted for their short axillary inflorescence with brightly coloured flowers. A key feature is the distinct epichile on the saccate hypochile and the presence of two porate, globose pollinia on a slender stipe.

Discovery and Identification

In September 2024, researchers collected fresh specimens during a botanical excursion in Vijoynagar. The team comprised Vinay Kumar Sahani, Minom Pertin, and Khyanjeet Gogoi. Identification was made through detailed examination of flower structures, especially the sepals and petals, and comparison with existing literature. This is the first time Gastrochilus pechei has been recorded in India.

Habitat and Flowering Season

Gastrochilus pechei thrives in moist, evergreen rainforests, often growing on small trees near riverbanks. It flowers between September and October. The habitat conditions in Vijoynagar closely resemble those in Myanmar’s Nuangmeng town, where the orchid was previously known to bloom.

Significance

Before this discovery, 22 species of the Gastrochilus genus were recorded in India, with 15 species found in Arunachal Pradesh. The finding of Gastrochilus pechei strengthens the evidence of shared flora between Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar. It also emphasises the rich biodiversity of the region and the importance of conservation efforts in these fragile ecosystems.

Orchid State

Arunachal Pradesh is renowned for its orchid diversity. The state hosts nearly 60% of India’s orchid species. Its varied climate and terrain offer ideal conditions for many rare and endemic orchids. The discovery of Gastrochilus pechei adds to the botanical importance of this region and encourages further research and exploration.
