Freedom Fighter and Socialist Activist ‘Socio’ Vasu Dies at 103

P. Vasu, popularly known as ‘Socio’ Vasu, died at his residence in Cheruvannur, Kozhikode, on 8 October 2026, aged 103. Born in January 1923, he became involved in the national movement during his school years and later joined the socialist movement after India’s independence.

Early Life and Political Involvement

Vasu’s interest in the national movement strengthened after he heard Mahatma Gandhi speak in Kozhikode in 1934. He joined the socialist movement after 1947 and received party membership from Jayaprakash Narayan in Kozhikode. His dedication to socialist ideals led to the popular name ‘Socio’ Vasu. In 1951, Vasu declined an offer of 10 acres of land and ₹2,000 from the Madras Presidency for freedom fighters. He stated that he had not taken part in the freedom struggle to receive material benefits.

Role in the Quit India Movement

The Quit India Movement began in August 1942, during the Second World War, with the Indian National Congress’s demand for an end to British rule. Vasu participated in the movement and led a protest march from Kundaithodu to Cheruvannur. British police arrested and assaulted him, and he spent more than three months in prison. During the Emergency, imposed in India from 1975 to 1977, Vasu took part in a protest that involved picketing post offices. Police brutality during the protest led to his hospitalisation for nearly a month.

Recognition and Final Rites

In 1997, President K. R. Narayanan felicitated Vasu in New Delhi during events marking the 50th anniversary of India’s Independence. His funeral was scheduled to take place with state honours at the Gotheshwaram crematorium in Kozhikode at 11 a.m. on 9 October 2026.
