IIT Ropar Awards First Defence Technology MTech Degrees to Army Officers

On 9 October 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar awarded its first MTech (Defence Technology) degrees to 59 officers of the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S). IIT Ropar Director Professor Rajeev Ahuja presented the degrees at ACC&S in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra. IIT Ropar and ACC&S jointly developed the postgraduate programme, which is the first IIT programme designed specifically for military applications.

Technology education at IITs

The Indian Institutes of Technology are institutions of national importance established under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. IIT Ropar is an Indian Institute of Technology located in Punjab. An MTech is a postgraduate degree in technology or engineering. The programme’s curriculum includes applied learning, hands-on research and problem-solving related to defence applications.

Indian Army Armoured Corps

The Armoured Corps is a combat arm of the Indian Army associated with armoured fighting vehicles, including tanks. The Armoured Corps Centre and School provides specialised training connected with the corps. The joint programme links academic training with military requirements, and its areas of research and development include armoured vehicle technologies, advanced armaments and new materials.

Defence technology and self-reliance

Defence indigenisation refers to developing or producing defence equipment and technologies within India. The programme’s stated areas include technology modernisation and indigenisation in the armed forces and defence manufacturing. The initiative is linked to India’s vision of self-reliance in defence and the goals of Viksit Bharat 2047. At the degree ceremony, Captain Abhishek Kumar received the Commandant ACC&S Rolling Trophy and the Commandant’s Gold Medal for performance in Tank Technology Course-54.
