First Centre of Excellence for Skill Development in Power Sector- Highlights

Skill India recently established the Centre of Excellence for skill development in power sector. The centre is an outcome of collaboration between Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of National Education and Youth (Government of France) and Schneider Electric. The Centre has been established in the campus of National Institute of Solar Energy, Gurugram, Haryana.

About the Centre

The Centre will design and deliver training for instructors, trainers in solar and power sectors. The Centre has high-end modern labs designed to strengthen the relationship between India and France. The Solar labs set up in the centre of excellence will provide hands on training to latest solar technology. The Power Sector Skill Council is to manage the operations of the centre. The Council has prepared required learning contents for various job roles in generation, transmission and distribution of power.

Skill India Mission

The Skill India Mission was launched in 2015. The main objective of the scheme is to provide market-relevant skills to more than forty crore people by 2022. It will create opportunities to develop talents in Indian youth.


According to National Skill Development Council, India will need more than twelve crores of skilled manpower by 2022. However, the casual workers who constitute to 90% of the labour force do not receive adequate training. Therefore, it is essential to launch schemes that focus on skill development.

Schemes under Skill India initiative

The following are the schemes that are implemented under the Skill India initiative:

National Skill Development Mission

It was launched to create convergence of various sectors with respect to activities related to skill training.

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana

It is a skill certification programme. It aims to encourage the youth to take up training in industry-related skills.

India Skill Development Service

It focuses on training Directorate of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. It is a Group A service that gives big push to the skilling initiatives of the Government.
