As per the report, the number of poor people in India fell by about 415 million between 2005-06 and 2019-21. India has the largest number of poor people worldwide (228.9 mn) followed by Nigeria (96.7 mn).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the two-day PM Kisan Samman Sammelan 2022 at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in the national capital.
He also launched the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Urvarak Pariyojana — One Nation One fertiliser scheme under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers. Under the scheme, companies must market all subsidised fertilisers under a single brand ‘Bharat’.

As per the US government-funded NGO Freedom House, India’s internet freedom score improved by two points to 51 after efforts to bridge the digital divide in the country.
India’s score was 49 in Internet Freedom in 2021. The improvement in the score is also based on reduced frequency and intensity of internet shutdowns in the country.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on 17th October to raise awareness about the global issue of poverty. The theme for this year is ‘Dignity For all in Practice’.
In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. According to the UN, ‘dignity’ is a fundamental right and the basis of other fundamental rights and every human being is entitled to dignity.

Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka, has been awarded the 2022 Booker Prize for Fiction for the novel ‘The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida’.
The novel is a metaphysical thriller which tells the story of the photographer of its title. Karunatilaka has become the second Sri Lankan-born author to win, following Michael Ondaatje, who won in 1992.
