The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, recently launched the BHARAT study under its Longevity India Program. BHARAT stands for Biomarkers of Healthy Aging, Resilience, Adversity, and Transitions. The study aims to map physiological, molecular, and environmental indicators that drive ageing in Indians. It will build India’s first comprehensive ageing database. It includes multiparametric analysis, advanced clinical assessment, and lifestyle factors. It will identify biomarkers for healthy ageing and set the Bharat Baseline for normal health values in India.

Recently, Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla interacted with students from the International Space Station (ISS) using ham radio. Ham radio, also called amateur radio, is a licensed radio service using radio waves for communication. It is used for education, knowledge sharing, and emergency or SOS communication. It needs a transceiver, antenna, and dedicated frequency operated by licensed ham operators. Communication can be local, global, or in space. In India, anyone above 12 years can use ham radio with a licence from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

July is observed as Sarcoma Cancer Awareness Month to highlight rare and misunderstood cancers. Sarcoma is a group of cancers starting in bones and soft tissues like fat, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and deep skin layers. Sarcomas are divided into soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas with over 70 subtypes. Sarcoma often appears as a painless lump that grows over time. Diagnosis is delayed because symptoms look like cysts or injuries. Sarcomas make up 1% of adult cancers and 15% of paediatric cancers but cause severe impacts due to poor awareness.

Recently, 300 acres of encroached forest land were cleared in Bukkapatna Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary. It is located in Tumakuru district of Karnataka. This area was declared a sanctuary in 2019 to protect the Indian Gazelle, also called Chinkara. It is the second Chinkara sanctuary in Karnataka after Yadahalli in Bagalkot district, declared in 2016. The sanctuary has wood savannahs with plenty of grasses and scattered native trees. It supports rich wildlife and helps conserve the Chinkara population.

Recently, the Prime Minister said descendants of Girmitiyas are now known for their success, service, and values instead of struggle. Girmitiyas were Indian indentured labourers who left India in the 19th century to work in British colonies. The term Girmitiya comes from the word “girmit”, an Indian pronunciation of “agreement”. These labourers signed agreements hoping for better wages and jobs. They travelled on old slave ships and lived in poor slave-like barracks. They faced a practice called “blackbirding”, meaning forced or deceptive recruitment for cheap labour abroad.
