Nihal Sarin won the Silver Lake Open chess tournament in Serbia on June 29, 2021. The third-seeded Indian emerged on top of the field with eight points from nine rounds. The second and third places were also taken by Indians Raunak Sadhwani and Abhimanyu Puranik who scored seven points each.

NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) was recently given a two-year mission extension.
It is a near-Earth object (NEO) hunting space telescope, which searches for asteroids and comets – including objects that could pose a hazard to Earth. The telescope has provided an estimate of the size of over 1,850 near-Earth objects.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) gave its nod to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education to provide technical assistance for satellite TV classrooms in India.
This aims to bridge the learning gap due to COVID-induced lockdown. ISRO scientists made a presentation before the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Education, MEITY and Doordarshan, about the proposed satellite TV classroom for students.

Valmiki National Park and Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the India-Nepal border in Bihar, on the bank of river Gandak. It is the only National Park in the state of Bihar.
The Authorities of the Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) have identified 150 vultures in different ranges of the protected area. A proposed plan for vulture conservation is sent to the Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (IDWH).

Tropical storm Elsa recently hit Cuba. More than 100,000 people in the country evacuated from flood-prone areas in the potential path of the storm.
It subsequently exited Cuba, east of the city of Havana, towards Florida. Cuba faced heavy rains due to the storm, causing light flooding in the capital in lower lying coastal areas. Elsa caused at least three direct deaths and some damages to infrastructure and agriculture.

India has been outperforming the global growth in market- capitalisation for the last five years, at 14.7% annually against 13.25%.
In the month of June, India’s share of the world market capitalisation rose to 2.60%, which was more than the long-term average of 2.45%, as per media reports. India’s market-cap rose 66% in one year to $3.02 trillion last month, which was also higher than the 44% growth of global market-cap.

The first commercial shipment of Mishri variety of cherries from the Kashmir valley has been exported to Dubai from Srinagar.
This export is a significant step towards boosting horticultural exports. Earlier, a sample consignment was sent through the air which was transhipped from Mumbai. After a huge response from the consumers in Dubai, this commercial shipment was undertaken.

Indian Naval Ship Tabar participated in military exercises with the Italian Navy after entering the Port of Naples.
The ship also undertook a Maritime Partnership Exercise with ITS Antonio Marceglia, a frontline frigate of the Italian Navy, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Indian Army chief Manoj Mukund Naravane is on a four-day visit to the UK and Italy.

DBT-National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), Kalyani is an Autonomous Institute funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.
DBT-NIBMG has created a database of genomic variations in oral cancer named dbGENVOC. This is the first of its kind database in the world. It is a free, browsable online database, which has a built-in powerful search engine. It also allows statistical and bioinformatic analysis to be carried out online.
