Suo-motto action by Government in opposition to deceptive advertisements

  • A self-governing authority being established to take suo motu action against deceptive advertisements.
  • The agency will comprise of experts from a variety of fields to verify the overstated claims about their products and services in their advertisements. I&B Ministry in talk with other stakeholders to sketch the policy at the soonest.
  • Currently, the Food Processing, Health and Information and Broadcasting Ministries are dealing with deceptive advertisements under a variety of legislations independently.

  • 68th Azad Hind Haqoomat Day was celebrated in Guwahati.

Chaudhary Charan Singh HAU, Hisar declared as ‘Centre of excellence for Pearl Millet (Bajra)’

  • Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar was approved by the Union Agriculture Ministry has approved as a Centre of Excellence for pearl millet (Bajra) . Rs. 1 Crore has been authorized to popularize bajra , known as the primary food of the poor.

Joint Venture b/w Bharti Enterprises (India) and Softbank (Japan)

  • Bharti Softbank Holdings Pvt. Ltd, a 50:50 Joint Venture was formed b/w the Bharti Enterprises (the parent company of Airtel) and Japanese internet firm SoftBank Corp for offering mobile internet services in India.

266 ‘unwanted’ ‘Nakushas’ to be renamed “Aishwarya”

  • Pointing an end to the practice in countryside Maharashtra of naming a girl child Nakusha (unwanted), particularly if the family was anticipating the birth of a boy, the Local Govt authorities “renamed” 266 such identified girls as Aishwarya (wealth) on Saturday October 22, 2011 at the Satara District, Maharashtra.

Assam: Ranked 1st in rice production

  • The Union Agriculture Ministry ranked Assam 1st in position in rice production in 2010-11.
  • Assam produced around 51 lakh Metric ton rice in 2010-11 which is 15.4% higher than the year-ago period.

Begum Nusrat Bhutto wife of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto passes away

  • Begum Nusrat Bhutto (82), Wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto passed away. She was 82. She married Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1951. She is also the mother late Benazir Bhutto, former PPP chairman and former Pakistani Prime Minister.

Massive Earthquake in Turkey

  • A massive Earthquake of 7.3 magnitude in southeast part of the Turkey claimed 500-1,000 lives. Emergency workers battled to rescue people trapped in buildings in the city of Van and surrounding districts on the banks of Lake Van, near Turkey’s border with Iran.

World Polio Day observed on October 24, 2011

  • The World Polio Day was observed on October 24, 2011. On the occasion of World Polio day, the Govt has also determined to take care of any new case of polio as a public health emergency.
  • Govt has prepared an Emergency Response Plan to give polio vaccines to children in all high risk areas. An intensive immunisation campaign has been launched all over the country to totally eliminate polio.
  • In a noteworthy accomplishment, only 1 polio case has been noticed in India so far in 2011, making it the longest polio free period.

50th raising day celebrated by ITBP on October 24, 2011

  • ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police Force) celebrated its 50th raising day on October 24, 2011.
  • The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is an Indian force conceived on October 24, 1962 for security along the India’s border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, border covering 2115 kilometres. It is one of the Central Armed Police Forces. Only four battalions were sanctioned to begin with, to fill up the security vacuum that was prevalent at that time on the Indo-Tibetan border. Later in view of the additional responsibilities and the task redefined in 1976, the Force was restructured in 1978.
  • The ITBP is trained in Civil Medical Camp, disaster management, and nuclear, biological and chemical disasters. ITBP personnel have been deployed abroad in UN peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Haiti, Sudan, and elsewhere.
