BRIC-RAB Meeting Sets Roadmap for India’s Biotech Future
India’s biotechnology sector marked a key institutional milestone with the inaugural meeting of the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council–Research Advisory Board (BRIC-RAB) held on 27–28 March 2026 at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology, Faridabad. BRIC, established as an apex autonomous body under the Department of Biotechnology, integrates 14 autonomous institutes into a unified framework aimed at enhancing coordination, innovation and mission-driven research.
Formation and Role of BRIC-RAB
The Research Advisory Board, chaired by Prof. K. VijayRaghavan, has been constituted to provide strategic oversight to BRIC’s research ecosystem. It is responsible for guiding, reviewing and monitoring scientific programmes across BRIC institutes while fostering the development of new missions and targeted initiatives. The board plays a crucial role in aligning institutional research with national priorities and long-term bioeconomic growth.
Vision for a Unified Biotech Ecosystem
During the meeting, Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary, DBT and Director General of BRIC, emphasised the need to co-create the next phase of India’s biotechnology transformation. He highlighted the importance of designing mission-oriented programmes supported by innovative strategies and governance reforms. The goal is to transform BRIC into a cohesive yet decentralised national biotechnology laboratory capable of addressing complex scientific challenges.
Importance of Collaboration and Multidisciplinary Research
Discussions underscored the need for multidisciplinary teams, shared infrastructure and open knowledge systems. Experts stressed that modern scientific challenges require collaborative approaches and efficient use of resources. Presentations by institutional leaders showcased capabilities across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, environmental science and data-driven research, supported by emerging biomanufacturing hubs and biofoundries.
