BIMSTEC Cancer Care Training Programme Phase Two Launched in Visakhapatnam

The second phase of the Specialised Training Programme in Cancer Care for BIMSTEC countries was formally launched on Monday at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Visakhapatnam. The initiative reflects India’s growing role in regional health capacity building and aims to strengthen oncology services across the Bay of Bengal region through structured training and collaboration.

The programme was inaugurated by C. S. R. Ram, Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC & SAARC) in the Ministry of External Affairs. Addressing participants, he said the initiative brings together cancer-care professionals from BIMSTEC member countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Nepal. He emphasised that rising cancer incidence and unequal access to quality care in the region make skill development and institutional capacity building an urgent priority.

Objectives and Strategic Significance

The training programme aims to enhance cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research capabilities while fostering regional cooperation. It seeks to equip healthcare professionals with practical skills and exposure to advanced oncology practices, thereby improving patient outcomes in their home countries. Officials said the initiative also supports collaborative research and knowledge exchange among BIMSTEC nations.

Institutional Framework and Background

The initiative was announced by the Prime Minister of India at the 6th BIMSTEC Summit and is being implemented by the Tata Memorial Centre with support from the Ministry of External Affairs. The first edition of the programme, held between July and August 2025, trained 21 cancer-care professionals from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Nepal, laying the foundation for expanded regional engagement.
