Bharat Gen

India launched Bharat Gen, a groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative. This multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) is designed to cater to the diverse linguistic and cultural landscape of India. The initiative was revealed at the BharatGen Summit, the largest event focused on Generative AI in the country. Bharat Gen is a product of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and is supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It aims to revolutionise AI applications across various sectors.

Development and Purpose

Bharat Gen is developed to provide AI solutions in 22 Indian languages. It integrates text, speech, and image processing. This helps in creating a more inclusive approach to technology. The initiative seeks to empower critical sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance. By offering region-specific solutions, Bharat Gen aims to serve every Indian effectively.

Government Support and Vision

The initiative is backed by government funding and a consortium of academic institutions and innovators. Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, described it as a national mission. He emphasised the importance of ethical and inclusive AI that reflects Indian values. Bharat Gen aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “India’s Techade,” focusing on innovation and inclusion.

Impact on Healthcare and Governance

Bharat Gen has the potential to transform healthcare delivery. AI-powered telemedicine services can communicate in patients’ native languages, encouraging trust and improving care. The initiative also enhances governance through platforms like CPGRAMS, which integrates multilingual feedback systems. This facilitates better citizen engagement and grievance redressal.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The initiative supports entrepreneurship and innovation. Over 3,000 Agri-tech StartUps have emerged, showcasing successful projects like lavender cultivation in Jammu & Kashmir. Bharat Gen is executed through a network of 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs), promoting research and development.

Collaborative Efforts

The summit featured collaborations among government departments and research hubs. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to deepen these partnerships. The Generative AI Hackathon 2025 was also launched to encourage student innovators to tackle real-world challenges using AI.

Future Directions

Bharat Gen’s mission focuses on four pillars – technology development, entrepreneurship, human resource development, and international collaboration. These areas will drive the future of AI in India, ensuring that it remains relevant and impactful across various sectors.
