Ayushman Bharat Revolutionize Public Healthcare in India

India is experiencing a major transformation in public healthcare with the Ayushman Bharat scheme completing seven years. The initiative aims to provide affordable and quality healthcare to all citizens. It has expanded access, reduced financial burden, and introduced preventive health measures on a large scale.
Overview of Ayushman Bharat Scheme
Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is the world’s largest health assurance programme. It connects over four lakh healthcare facilities and nearly seven lakh professionals. The scheme has issued more than 41 crore Ayushman Cards, enabling cashless treatment at the point of care. It covers over 55 crore citizens across India.
Financial Protection and Out-of-Pocket Expense Reduction
Between 2015 and 2022, India’s public health expenditure rose from 29% to 48%. During this period, out-of-pocket expenses decreased from 63% to 39%. The scheme has saved families an estimated Rs 10,000 to 15,000 per dialysis session. It has also contributed to a 90% rise in access to cancer treatment. The Economic Survey 2024–25 credits the scheme with saving over Rs 1.25 lakh crore in out-of-pocket expenses and preventing six crore people from falling into poverty annually due to healthcare costs.
Expansion of Preventive Healthcare
Preventive care is a key component of Ayushman Bharat. Over 55 crore screenings for hypertension and 48 crore diabetes screenings have been conducted. The government has organised more than 5.7 crore yoga and meditation sessions. Nearly 1.8 lakh Aarogya Mandirs have been established to promote wellness and early detection of diseases.
Access to Critical Care and Specialised Treatments
The scheme has broadened access to critical care including dialysis, cancer treatment, and major surgeries. It has improved affordability and availability of complex medical procedures. This expansion has helped reduce mortality and morbidity from serious illnesses by enabling early and affordable treatment.
Use of Technology and Data Integration
Ayushman Bharat integrates more than 72 crore health records digitally. This large database supports efficient patient management and policy planning. Technology ensures transparency, quick claim processing, and better monitoring of health outcomes. The scheme exemplifies how digital tools can enhance healthcare delivery at scale.
Impact on Human Empowerment and Healthcare Equity
The initiative focuses on dignity and empowerment by removing financial barriers to healthcare. It promotes equity by reaching vulnerable and underserved populations. The scheme’s scale and compassion have set a global example of inclusive healthcare. It demonstrates how government policy can transform health systems and improve lives.
