Aravalli Restoration

The Aravalli mountain range, one of India’s oldest, is undergoing restoration initiative. Recently, a national workshop was held in Udaipur, Rajasthan, to devise strategies for the Aravalli Landscape Restoration. The event was led by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav. The workshop aimed to finalise a Detailed Action Plan for the restoration of this vital ecological region.

Background of the Aravalli Range

The Aravalli range spans several states including Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi. It plays important role in maintaining ecological balance, biodiversity, and climate resilience. However, the region has faced severe degradation due to urbanisation, mining, and deforestation.

Objectives of the Workshop

The primary goal was to create a comprehensive action plan for ecological restoration. This plan includes afforestation, reforestation, and the restoration of water bodies. The workshop also aimed to enhance community involvement and create sustainable livelihoods through eco-tourism and agroforestry.

Key Strategies for Restoration

The restoration initiative focuses on five pillars

  • Ecological Restoration: This includes assisted natural regeneration and planting native species.
  • Community Participation: Local communities, especially women and youth, are encouraged to participate in planning and implementation.
  • Policy and Governance: Strengthening regulatory frameworks and enhancing monitoring mechanisms are crucial.
  • Sustainable Livelihoods: Promoting eco-tourism and non-timber forest produce-based enterprises will benefit local economies.
  • Research and Innovation: Utilising GIS mapping and remote sensing will inform restoration efforts.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Regular monitoring and evaluation are critical for assessing the progress of restoration efforts. Stakeholders are encouraged to meet annually to review achievements and identify challenges. This continuous feedback loop will enhance the effectiveness of the action plan.

Future Directions

The action plan outlines a roadmap for restoring the ecological integrity of the Aravallis. It aims to balance ecological health with community needs, ensuring a sustainable future for the region.
