UNESCO declares Panna Tiger Reserve as Biosphere Reserve

The Union Minister of Environment Shri Prakash Javadekar announced that Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh has now been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Currently there are 714 biosphere reserves spread in 129 countries. This includes 21 trans boundary sites. They all belong to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

ICGS C-452 commissioned in Indian Navy at Ratnagiri

On November 3, 2020, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship C-452 was commissioned in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The ship was designed and built by Larsen & Toubro.

Violinist T. N. Krishnan dies in Chennai at 92

On November 2, 2020, the Legendary Carnatic music violinist T.N. Krishnan passed away in Chennai at the age of 92. He received Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Padma Shri in 1973. He has also won Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1974 and was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2006.

Abu Dhabi’s SWF: The first notified Fund to get 100% IT exemption

India has granted tax free status to Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) of Abu Dhabi. This is to expedite foreign investment in India in priority areas. This makes MIC Redwood, the first foreign SWF to enjoy 100% tax exemption.

Micromax launches 2 smartphones

Micromax recently made a comeback to India’s smartphone market with the launch of two smart phone. The company has launched the IN Mobile series. They were Micromax IN Note 1 and the Micromax IN 1B smartphones.

India, GCC Troika hold annual Political Dialogue in virtual mode

On November 3, 2020, India and the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Troika held annual Political Dialogue in virtual mode. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar attended the dialogue. The GCC comprises Arab states of the Persian Gulf – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Mission Sagar-II: INS Airavat reaches Sudan with food aid

On November 2, 2020, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Airavat reached Sudan. It carried 100 tonnes of food aid as a part of Mission Sagar-II. Under the second phase of the mission, INS Airavat will deliver food aid to Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti and Eritrea amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Duarte Pacheco elected as new President of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU)

The Governing Council of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) is organising its 206th session in a virtual mode between November 1 and November 4. On November 3, 2020, Duarte Pacheco of Portugal was elected the new President of IPU. He has been elected  for the period 2020-2023. The IPU is currently being led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Indian Parliamentary Delegation.

Belarus: First nuclear power plant starts operating

On November 3, 2020, the first nuclear power plant in Belarus began operating. The Astravyets nuclear power plant was built by Russia. It is located 40 km south of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. The Nuclear Power plant has been connected to Belarus’ power grid.
