Y Nagappa
Y. Nagappa (c. 1944–27 October 2020) was an Indian politician and former medical practitioner who served as the Minister for Social Welfare in the state of Karnataka. Over several decades, he became a notable public figure within the state’s political landscape, representing the Harihar constituency and contributing to social welfare initiatives while also maintaining a background in community healthcare.
Early Life and Medical Career
Before entering electoral politics, Nagappa trained and worked as a physician, practising at Akkialur in Hangal taluk of the Haveri district. His medical service extended to a position as a Medical Officer at the government hospital in Harihar, where he became well known among local residents. His transition into public life occurred after roughly three decades of medical and community involvement, allowing him to build a reputation rooted in public service and familiarity with rural health challenges.
His experience in the medical field influenced his political perspective, especially in areas related to social welfare, healthcare access and the needs of marginalised communities.
Political Career
Nagappa entered active politics as a member of the Indian National Congress and went on to win the Harihar Assembly seat three times, marking him as a significant regional leader within Karnataka politics. His tenure as Minister for Social Welfare placed him at the forefront of initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for disadvantaged groups, expanding welfare schemes and overseeing departmental reforms.
Throughout his career, he remained associated with constituency development work, focusing on social uplift, public health and administrative responsibilities. His electoral record reflects periods of both strong support and electoral challenge within a competitive political landscape.
In the 2008 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections, Nagappa contested the Harihar seat once again but was defeated by B. P. Harish, marking a shift in the constituency’s political representation. Despite this loss, his contributions to the region and his earlier ministerial role remained part of his public legacy.
Later Years and Death
Nagappa continued to be recognised as an experienced political figure and former minister in Karnataka. His long-standing association with both medical service and public life made him a respected personality, particularly within the Harihar and Haveri regions.
He passed away on 27 October 2020 at the age of 75. His death was noted across Karnataka’s political and social circles, with particular remembrance of his dual career as a doctor and public servant committed to welfare-driven governance.
