Waaree to Set Up 16 GWh Battery Gigafactory
In a major push to India’s clean-energy manufacturing ambitions, Waaree Energies has committed to establishing the country’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory at Rambilli in Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh. The project entails an investment of ₹8,175 crore and will have a production capacity of 16 GWh. The greenfield facility has received in-principle approval from the State Investment Promotion Board.
India’s Largest Integrated Battery Facility
The proposed plant will span the complete battery value chain, including cell manufacturing, battery pack assembly and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). With a capacity of 16 gigawatt-hours, it will be the largest battery manufacturing facility in India.
The integrated nature of the project is expected to enhance domestic value addition and reduce dependence on imported battery cells and components, particularly from East Asian markets. It also positions Andhra Pradesh as a key manufacturing hub in the emerging energy storage sector.
Boost to Clean-Energy Ecosystem
Welcoming the investment, IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh described the project as a milestone in the State’s clean-energy journey. He noted that the gigafactory aligns with the Government of Andhra Pradesh’s strategy to build a fully integrated clean-energy ecosystem, covering renewable power generation, equipment manufacturing and storage solutions.
The State’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy has already attracted substantial investments in renewable energy and solar module manufacturing. The new battery plant marks a critical step towards backward integration in advanced energy storage technologies.
Strategic Role in Energy Transition
Large-scale lithium-ion battery manufacturing is essential to support India’s renewable energy expansion, electric mobility push and grid stability requirements. Energy storage systems help manage intermittency in solar and wind power, ensuring reliable electricity supply.
The facility is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and attract ancillary industries, strengthening the region’s industrial base.
