UP Crosses 1 GW Residential Rooftop Solar Capacity Under PM Surya Ghar

Uttar Pradesh has surpassed the 1-gigawatt mark in residential rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana, becoming the third state after Gujarat and Maharashtra to achieve this milestone. The expansion reflects strong household participation and effective policy incentives.

Milestone Achieved Through Rapid Installations

The state has installed solar systems on 2.90 lakh homes, contributing 1,003.64 MW of rooftop capacity. Around 2.93 lakh families now benefit from affordable or free monthly electricity. In FY25 alone, Uttar Pradesh added nearly 640 MW of residential rooftop systems, signalling widespread adoption across districts.

Financial Support Driving Adoption

UP has received over 9.7 lakh applications under the scheme. The Centre has provided ₹1,999 crore in subsidies, while the state has contributed nearly ₹600 crore. Consumers receive ₹15,000 per kW up to 2 kW and a total subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh for 3 kW systems. The payback period for a 3-kW installation in UP is just 20 months, compared with the national average of 30 months and 54 months without subsidies.

Economic And Environmental Benefits

Rooftop solar has helped save nearly 4,000 acres of land by reducing dependency on large solar parks. Households are receiving up to 300 units of free electricity per month. Rural homes save between ₹800–1,500 monthly, while urban homes save ₹1,500–2,500. The model supports agriculture through reliable daytime power and strengthens small urban enterprises.
