University of Patanjali Named First Yoga Ayurveda Cluster Centre

The University of Patanjali has been officially designated as the country’s first Yoga and Ayurveda-based Cluster Centre under the Gyan Bharatam Mission of the Ministry of Culture. The recognition marks a significant step in India’s efforts to preserve, document, and promote its ancient knowledge systems through institutional collaboration and academic leadership.

Recognition Under Gyan Bharatam Mission

The status was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Haridwar in the presence of Yogaguru Swami Ramdev, Vice-Chancellor Dr Acharya Balkrishna, and Gyan Bharatam Project Director Dr Anirban Dash. The Gyan Bharatam Mission focuses on safeguarding India’s intellectual heritage, particularly manuscripts and traditional knowledge, through systematic conservation and research.

Role of University of Patanjali

As a designated Cluster Centre, the University of Patanjali will mentor 20 associated institutions across the country. Its responsibilities include research, education, digitisation, and dissemination of manuscripts related to Yoga, Ayurveda, and allied Indian knowledge traditions. The university has already preserved over 50,000 ancient texts, digitised more than 42 lakh manuscript pages, and republished 40 manuscripts.

National Significance of the Appointment

Swami Ramdev highlighted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protecting India’s cultural identity and positioning traditional knowledge as a foundation for global leadership. Dr Acharya Balkrishna noted that 33 MoUs have been signed under the mission so far, including 20 cluster centres, with eight universities involved. The University of Patanjali is the first institution exclusively focused on Yoga and Ayurveda to receive this recognition.
