Union Cabinet Approves New Bihar Bridge, MSP Hike, and Other Key Decisions

Government recently greenlit several major initiatives, including constructing a new Ganga River bridge in Bihar and raising minimum support prices for copra.

Ganga Bridge to Boost Bihar Connectivity

A 4.56 km, six-lane bridge will be built over the Ganga, linking the Bihar areas of Digha and Sonepur. Currently connected only by roads unsuitable for heavy vehicles, the bridge will carry large ships and aid transport.

The Rs 3,064 crore project aims to improve connectivity between north and south Bihar and facilitate inland water transport. It is expected to be completed in 42 months.

Minimum Copra Prices Increased

The government hiked minimum support prices (MSPs) for copra by Rs 250-300 per quintal for the 2024 season. MSPs ensure minimum earnings for farmers when market rates fall.

The MSP rise comes as global copra prices declined recently. But India boosted rates 50% above production costs, evidencing its farmer support.

Over the last decade, copra MSPs have surged from Rs 5,250-5,500 per quintal to Rs 11,160-12,000 now.

Tripura Road Investment Approved

Approval was granted to upgrade a 135 km Khowai-Harina highway stretch in Tripura for Rs 2,486 crore. Japan will provide 70% financing.

The project will widen the road to two lanes with shoulders. This will enhance connectivity to Assam and Meghalaya while offering an alternative route to NH-8.
