UIDAI Launches New Aadhaar App for Secure Digital ID Access and Verification

India’s Unique Identification Authority has launched a new Aadhaar smartphone app that lets citizens securely carry a digital Aadhaar, reducing reliance on physical cards. The free app emphasises privacy, offering selective data sharing, biometric locks and QR-based verification, and supports up to five profiles on one device tied to the same registered mobile number.

What’s new in the Aadhaar app

The app functions as a digital ID wallet for everyday verification at banks, service centres and government offices. Users can display only the fields required for a transaction—such as name and photo—while hiding address or date of birth. QR codes enable swift, paperless checks, and an offline view allows access to saved details without data connectivity after initial setup. A built-in activity log tracks usage for transparency.

Privacy and security controls explained

Face authentication is mandated during onboarding to prevent impersonation. A six-digit security PIN protects profile access and can be changed anytime. The biometric lock restricts use of Aadhaar credentials until deliberately unlocked by the holder, adding a safeguard against misuse. Selective disclosure ensures only minimal information is shared, aligning with data-minimisation principles and everyday KYC needs.

How to download and set up

Install the official “Aadhaar” app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Choose your language and enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number. Verify using the OTP sent to the registered mobile number. Complete the face authentication scan. Set a six-digit security PIN. Add additional family profiles (up to five) where the same mobile number is registered. You can then present your digital Aadhaar or share a QR code as needed.

Exam Oriented Facts

  • The new Aadhaar app is free on Android and iOS.
  • Supports up to five profiles per device linked to one mobile number.
  • Includes face authentication, biometric lock and selective data sharing.
  • QR code enables quick, paperless verification offline/online.

Aadhaar app vs mAadhaar: who should use what

Use the new Aadhaar app as your daily digital ID—show limited fields, generate/scan QR codes, and manage multiple family profiles. Keep using mAadhaar for paperwork: downloading e-Aadhaar PDFs, ordering PVC cards, generating Virtual IDs, and managing account details such as updating the registered email or mobile number. Together, the two apps separate day-to-day identity presentation from document downloads and account administration.
