Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen passed away early Friday morning at a hospital in Bengaluru after prolonged treatment following a massive cerebral stroke. He was 72. Sen’s demise has plunged Tripura into deep mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum and beyond.

State and National Leaders Mourn His Demise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief, recalling Sen’s contributions to Tripura’s development and his commitment to social causes. Condolences were also conveyed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. Leaders described Sen as a calm, principled public servant who upheld parliamentary traditions with dignity.

Three Days of State Mourning Announced

The Tripura government has declared three days of state mourning as a mark of respect. The national flag will be flown at half-mast, and a public holiday was observed on Friday. Sen’s mortal remains will be brought to Tripura on Saturday and placed at the Tripura Legislative Assembly for public homage before being taken to his hometown, Dharmanagar, for the final rites.

Political Journey Spanning Five Decades

Biswabandhu Sen began his political career in the 1970s as a Congress worker. He served as vice-chairman of the Dharmanagar Nagar Panchayat in 1988 and was elected twice as an MLA on a Congress ticket. In 2017, he joined the BJP and went on to win the 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections. In 2023, he was elected Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, a role in which he earned respect for fairness and restraint.
