Cheetah Project Steering Committee

In a significant conservation effort, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has set up the Cheetah Project Steering Committee.

The Role of NTCA

The NTCA, an authority under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, holds the responsibility of overseeing Project Cheetah. As the primary governing body, it plays a vital role in coordinating and managing the reintroduction efforts.

Formation of the Project Steering Committee

On May 26, the NTCA constituted the Project Steering Committee to guide and monitor the progress of Project Cheetah. Esteemed wildlife conservationist Rajesh Gopal has been appointed as the chairperson of the committee, bringing his expertise and knowledge to the forefront.

Members of the Committee

The Committee comprises esteemed individuals from various backgrounds, including R.N. Mehrotra, P.R. Sinha, H.S. Negi, G.S. Rawat, Qamar Qureshi, Inspector General of NTCA, Chief Wildlife Warden of Madhya Pradesh, and others. This diverse group of experts brings a wealth of experience and perspectives to ensure the success of the cheetah reintroduction program.

Kuno National Park: The Chosen Sanctuary

Kuno National Park, located in Madhya Pradesh, has been selected as the sanctuary for the reintroduction of cheetahs. This pristine habitat offers the necessary resources and conditions for cheetahs to thrive, making it an ideal location for their reintroduction.

Collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), renowned for its expertise in wildlife conservation, has partnered with the NTCA in Project Cheetah. Drawing upon their panel of cheetah experts involved in African cheetah conservation, the WII provides valuable insights and advice for the successful implementation of the reintroduction program.

Role of the Project Steering Committee

The Committee plays a pivotal role in Project Cheetah, reviewing and monitoring the program’s progress. They provide guidance and advice to the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department and the NTCA, ensuring that all aspects of the reintroduction effort align with the project’s objectives.

Promoting Eco-Tourism and Conservation

In addition to monitoring and reviewing the program, the Committee is also entrusted with suggesting regulations for eco-tourism activities in the cheetah habitat. By promoting responsible tourism practices, the committee aims to strike a balance between conservation efforts and local economic development.

Transition from the Cheetah Task Force

The establishment of the Project Steering Committee marks a transition from the previous Cheetah Task Force, which monitored the cheetah reintroduction program. With the new committee in place, its mandate spans two years, and it convenes monthly to ensure effective implementation.
