Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1966

Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1966 is a law that was passed by the Parliament to ensure seamless delivery of certain services, whose obstruction could affect the normal lives of people. State governments have their own separate ESMA with slight variations from the central law. Anyone who instigates a strike banned under this law will face incarceration of up to a year or a fine that may extend to Rs.1,000 or both.

The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the ESMA in the state for the next 6 months. The recent order extends the earlier 6-month imposition of the legislation.
