Tiananmen Vigil

Tiananmen Vigil

Tiananmen Vigil is an annual event observed in Hong Kong to mark the infamous 1989 Tiananmen Massacre – the deadly crackdown against dissidents by the PLA that caused thousands of deaths and injuries. Each year, thousands of Hong Kongers process to the city’s Victoria Park to light candles in a peaceful vigil to commemorate those who have lost their lives to the Chinese crackdown.

The Hong Kong authorities have banned the annual event that is to be held in June for the second consecutive year by citing the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Those who violate this order will be tried under the National Security law that was imposed last year.
