Thailand Seeks India’s Support for BRICS Membership Bid

Thailand has formally conveyed its aspiration to join BRICS and is seeking India’s backing ahead of New Delhi’s chairmanship of the grouping in 2026. The announcement came during a solemn National Day reception in New Delhi, where Thailand highlighted its intent to contribute to inclusive multilateralism and deeper South–South cooperation.

Thai Ambassador Chavanart Thangsumphant emphasised that Thailand views BRICS as a platform for equitable global governance. She noted that Thailand is eager to pursue its membership ambition in close partnership with India, a founding member of the grouping and host of the next BRICS Summit in 2026. Growing interest in the organisation has led several countries to seek alignment with its expanding global influence.

Strengthening India–Thailand Strategic Partnership

Diplomatic ties between India and Thailand have experienced notable advancement, especially following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit earlier this year that elevated relations to a Strategic Partnership. The ambassador underscored the deep cultural and civilisational links between the two nations, reaffirming a shared vision for strengthened regional engagement.

Recent High-Level Exchanges and Maritime Convergence

The recent visit of Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow to India further accelerated cooperation in trade, connectivity, security and regional frameworks. During the discussions, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar described Thailand as an important maritime neighbour, reflecting the trust and aligned strategic perspectives shaping bilateral interactions. Thailand raised the matter of its BRICS membership during this visit.
