Tato-II Hydro-Electric Project

The Union government recently approved investment of over Rs 8,000 crore in Arunachal Pradesh. This decision focuses on the construction of the 700 MW Tato-II Hydro-Electric Project in the Shi Yomi district. The project aims to strengthen the state’s power supply and contribute to the national grid. It is expected to be completed within 72 months.
Tato-II Hydro-Electric Project
- The Tato-II project will have an installed capacity of 700 MW, consisting of four units of 175 MW each.
- It is designed to generate approximately 2,738 million units of electricity annually. The project will be implemented as a joint venture between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) and the Arunachal Pradesh government.
Government Support
The total estimated cost is Rs 8,146.21 crore. The Centre will provide Rs 458.79 crore for roads, bridges, and transmission lines. Additionally, Rs 436.13 crore will be given as Central Financial Assistance towards the state’s equity share. This financial backing is crucial for the project’s timely completion and infrastructure development.
Power Allocation
Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power from the project. An additional 1% will be allocated to the Local Area Development Fund (LADF). This power supply will improve electricity availability in the state and help balance the national grid during peak demands.
Socio-Economic and Local Development
The project promises socio-economic benefits. It will create direct and indirect employment opportunities. Local suppliers, enterprises, and MSMEs will gain under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan initiative. Infrastructure upgrades include 32.88 kilometres of new roads and bridges, primarily for local use.
Community Facilities
Rs 20 crore has been earmarked for community facilities such as hospitals, schools, marketplaces, and playgrounds. Local communities will also benefit from compensation and corporate social responsibility activities linked to the project. These efforts aim to improve living standards and promote sustainable development in the region.
