Tamil Nadu’s Space Industrial Policy

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet approved the Space Industrial Policy during a meeting led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. This policy aims to stimulate growth in the state’s space sector, following similar initiatives by Karnataka and Gujarat. The Indian Space Policy 2023 provides a supportive framework for the national space ecosystem. Tamil Nadu is strategically positioned to enhance its space capabilities.

Key Components of the Space Industrial Policy

The policy focuses on satellite manufacturing, launch services, and satellite services. It aims to attract ₹10,000 crore in investments over five years, creating approximately 10,000 jobs. The state will leverage its strengths in electronics and precision manufacturing to support these sectors.

ISRO’s Role in Tamil Nadu

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has established the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IRPC) in Mahendragiri. This facility is crucial for testing engines and conducting research and development. Additionally, ISRO is setting up India’s second spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam, aimed at enhancing satellite launch capabilities.

Support for Startups and Innovation

Tamil Nadu is home to numerous space startups focusing on various subdomains. These include reusable launch vehicles and in-space manufacturing. The National Institute of Technology in Tiruchi hosts the Space Technology Incubation Centre, which supports ISRO’s developmental projects.

Collaboration with IN-SPACe

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has encouraged the Tamil Nadu government to formulate this policy. IN-SPACe aims to promote and oversee activities of non-government entities in the space sector. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has signed a MoU with IN-SPACe to facilitate manufacturing and research initiatives.

Incentives and Support Mechanisms

The government plans to offer payroll subsidies for companies involved in R&D and establish global capability centres. Select regions will be designated as Space Bays, providing structured incentives for investments under ₹300 crore. Additionally, developers of space industrial parks may receive housing incentives and subsidies for sustainable initiatives.

Applications of Space Technologies

Space technologies have broad applications across various sectors, including disaster management, agriculture, and health. The policy aims to integrate these technologies into Tamil Nadu’s governance, enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
