Tamil Nadu has emerged as India’s leading state in textile exports, recording shipments worth USD 7,997.17 million in the financial year 2024–25. The state has witnessed a steady rise in export performance, marking an increase of over 29 per cent in the past four years. This growth has enabled Tamil Nadu to surpass traditional textile powerhouses such as Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Consistent growth in export performance

Textile exports from Tamil Nadu stood at approximately USD 6,193 million in 2020–21. Over the next four years, the state recorded a significant rise, reaching nearly USD 8 billion. This consistent increase reflects strong industrial capacity, improved supply chains and targeted policy support. The state’s share now constitutes about 21.84 per cent of India’s total textile exports.

Comparison with other leading states

Tamil Nadu’s performance has placed it ahead of other major textile-exporting states. Gujarat secured the second position with exports valued at USD 5,646.01 million, while Maharashtra ranked third with USD 3,831.29 million. The gap highlights Tamil Nadu’s dominant position in the sector and its ability to maintain a competitive edge.

Policy support and industrial ecosystem

The growth has been attributed to coordinated efforts across various government departments and industry stakeholders. State-led initiatives focusing on infrastructure development, skill enhancement and export facilitation have contributed to the expansion. The presence of established textile hubs, efficient logistics and a strong workforce base has further strengthened Tamil Nadu’s position.
