Tamil Nadu Gains Five New GI Tags for Traditional Products

Tamil Nadu has expanded its Geographical Indication (GI) portfolio with five newly certified products, strengthening recognition for the state’s artisanal skills, agricultural heritage and indigenous raw materials. The additions bring Tamil Nadu’s total number of GI-tagged items to 74.

Heritage Woraiyur Cotton Sarees Recognised

The Woraiyur cotton sarees, rooted in Chola-era textile traditions, have earned GI status for their refined craftsmanship. Distinguished by thin borders, minimal patterns and the iconic Korvai technique, these sarees use vibrant colour palettes and geometric motifs. The Devanga weaving community continues to preserve these techniques, while the mineral-rich Cauvery water enhances dye absorption and fabric durability.

Thooyamalli Rice Gains Agricultural Distinction

Thooyamalli rice, named for its jasmine-like purity and lustre, has secured recognition for its nutritional value and cultural significance. The variety matures in about 135–140 days and is known for its shiny grain and mild flavour. It is widely used in dishes such as biriyani and is now predominantly cultivated in Kancheepuram district.

Ambasamudram Choppu Samaan Earns Craft GI Tag

The brightly coloured wooden toys of Ambasamudram, known as Choppu Samaan, have been granted GI certification. These lacquer-finished toys, traditionally shaped as miniature kitchen utensils, are valued for their smooth finish, eco-friendly materials and child-safe design. While artisans once used teak and rosewood, they now largely rely on sustainable sources such as rubber wood and eucalyptus.

Namakkal Stone Utensils and Kavindapadi Country Sugar Added

Namakkal’s soapstone utensils, known for their durability and resistance to acidic foods, now carry GI protection. These hand-crafted vessels are favoured for cooking and storing tamarind-rich dishes, milk and curd. Kavindapadi’s nattu sarkarai has also been recognised for its golden hue, sweetness and traditional processing methods supported by the region’s humid, canal-fed sugarcane fields.
