Revamped Sugamya Bharat App Empowers Disabled Users

The Government of India recently launched the revamped Sugamya Bharat App. This digital platform aims to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities across the country. The relaunch took place at the Purple Fest in Goa under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The app is designed to be a one-stop solution that connects users to information, services, and opportunities with ease.

Background and Purpose

The Sugamya Bharat App was originally introduced under the Accessible India Campaign. Its goal was to improve accessibility in public spaces. The new version expands its scope. It now serves as a digital hub where persons with disabilities can find government schemes, scholarships, job listings, and grievance redressal tools. This update reflects the government’s commitment to digital inclusion.

Key Features and Accessibility

The app offers a user-first and accessibility-first design. It supports screen readers and voice navigation. It is available in multiple Indian languages. The interface is intuitive and compatible with assistive technologies. These features ensure that users with different disabilities can navigate the app independently on both Android and iOS platforms.

Accessibility Mapping and Community Engagement

One of the app’s unique features is accessibility mapping. Users can locate and rate public places based on accessibility criteria. This crowdsourced data helps identify gaps in infrastructure. It also empowers the community to participate in improving public spaces. The mapping tool encourages transparency and accountability.

Consolidated Information and Services

The app consolidates various government schemes and benefits into a single directory. Users no longer need to visit multiple portals. It offers curated listings of jobs and educational opportunities tailored for persons with disabilities. This streamlining simplifies access to vital resources and promotes employment and education inclusion.

Grievance Redressal and Accountability

The grievance redressal module allows users to report inaccessible infrastructure or services directly through the app. This feature facilitates quicker responses from authorities. It also promotes accountability in making public spaces more inclusive. The feedback mechanism supports continuous improvement in accessibility standards.

Collaborative Development and Support

The app was developed with the support of SBI Foundation and technical partners including NAB Delhi, ISTEM, and Mission Accessibility. This collaboration combines government, non-profit, and private sector expertise. It reflects a shared commitment to bridging societal gaps through inclusive technology.
