Statistical Report on Value of Output from Agriculture and Allied Sectors

The National Statistics Office (NSO) recently published the Statistical Report on Value of Output from Agriculture and Allied Sectors (2011-12 to 2023-24). This report details the growth of agriculture and allied sectors over a twelve-year span. It marks changes in the Gross Value Added (GVA) and Gross Value of Output (GVO) across various sectors.
Gross Value Added Growth
The GVA of agriculture and allied sectors saw a remarkable growth of 225%. It increased from ₹1,502 thousand crore in 2011-12 to ₹4,878 thousand crore in 2023-24. This growth indicates a robust expansion in agricultural productivity and economic contribution.
Gross Value of Output Overview
The GVO at constant prices rose from ₹1,908 thousand crore in 2011-12 to ₹2,949 thousand crore in 2023-24. This marks an increase of approximately 54.6%. The crop sector is the largest contributor, accounting for 54.1% of total GVO in 2023-24.
Crop Sector Contributions
In the crop sector, cereals and fruits & vegetables are the most contributors. Together, they represent 52.5% of total crop GVO. Paddy and wheat dominate cereal production, constituting around 85% of the GVO for cereals in 2023-24.
State Contributions to GVO
Five states—Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, and Haryana—account for nearly 53% of the GVO of cereals. Uttar Pradesh remains the leading state despite a slight decrease in its share from 18.6% to 17.2%.
Fruit and Vegetable Trends
In 2023-24, the GVO of bananas surpassed that of mangoes for the first time. Potato continues to lead in the vegetable sector, with its GVO increasing over the years.
Livestock Sector Growth
The GVO of livestock products grew from ₹488 thousand crore in 2011-12 to ₹919 thousand crore in 2023-24. Milk remains the dominant product, although its share decreased from 67.2% to 65.9%. The meat group has gained a larger share, rising from 19.7% to 24.1%.
Forestry and Logging Developments
The forestry and logging sector showed consistent growth, increasing from ₹149 thousand crore to ₹227 thousand crore. The share of industrial wood in this sector surged from 49.9% to 70.2%.
Fishing and Aquaculture
Fishing and aquaculture are increasingly in India’s agricultural GVA. Their contribution rose from 4.2% in 2011-12 to 7.0% in 2023-24. Interestingly, the share of inland fish decreased while marine fish increased in importance.
