Shibu Soren Posthumously Conferred Padma Bhushan
Veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha patriarch Shibu Soren has been posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan in the field of public affairs. The honour was announced by the Union home ministry on the eve of Republic Day, recognising his decades-long role in championing tribal rights and leading the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. The decision, however, has also triggered renewed political demands for the Bharat Ratna in his name.
Life and Early Struggles
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village of Ramgarh district, Shibu Soren’s political consciousness was shaped by personal tragedy. His father was killed by moneylenders when Soren was just 13, an event that pushed him into a lifelong struggle against the mahajani pratha. Over the years, he emerged as a powerful voice for tribals, land rights and social justice, earning the title ‘Dishom Guru’ among his followers.
Role in Jharkhand Movement and Governance
Shibu Soren was one of the principal architects of the Jharkhand movement, mobilising tribal communities over decades for statehood, which was achieved in 2000. He served as chief minister of Jharkhand three times and represented the Dumka parliamentary constituency on eight occasions. His political career combined mass mobilisation with electoral politics, making him one of the most influential tribal leaders in independent India.
Political Reactions to the Padma Bhushan
While the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha welcomed the Padma Bhushan, it criticised the Centre for not conferring the Bharat Ratna. JMM leaders said the honour fell short of recognising Soren’s unparalleled contribution to tribal empowerment. The Congress echoed similar views. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party hailed the Padma Bhushan, calling it a tribute to Jharkhand’s soil, struggle and people’s movement.
