Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan to Make Way for Kartavya Bhawan

Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan are government office buildings in Lutyens’ Delhi that were constructed between 1956 and 1968. The Central Public Works Department has begun the process to vacate both buildings by the end of September 2026 for demolition and replacement by Kartavya Bhawans 4 and 5 under the Central Vista redevelopment project.

Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan

Shastri Bhawan has housed ministries such as Education, Information and Broadcasting, Women and Child Development, Petroleum, and Coal. Krishi Bhawan has housed the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and the Ministry of Rural Development. Both buildings are part of the central government office complex in New Delhi.

Kartavya Bhawan 4 and 5

The new Kartavya Bhawans 4 and 5 are planned at Plot No. 120, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Road, New Delhi. The construction tender has been awarded, and the project cost is estimated at about ₹3,155.41 crore, including five years of operation and maintenance. The planned construction period is 24 months.

Central Vista redevelopment project

The Central Vista redevelopment project covers the reorganisation of central government offices in the New Delhi area. The project includes new office buildings, improved security arrangements, and consolidation of ministries that were earlier spread across multiple locations.
