Shailesh Kumar Wins Gold at World Para Athletics Grand Prix

Reigning world champion Shailesh Kumar began his 2026 athletics season on a strong note by winning a gold medal in the men’s high jump T63 category at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi. The Indian para athlete registered a best jump of 1.84 metres in the event, marking a successful return to competition after recovering from a knee injury following the World Para Athletics Championships.

Season Opener with a Strong Performance

Shailesh Kumar cleared a height of 1.84 metres to secure the top position at the event. Although the jump was below his personal best of 1.91 metres, the athlete expressed satisfaction with the result, noting that it was his first competition of the season.

He also revealed that he had experienced pain in his left knee after the World Championships, which influenced his preparation strategy. The competition in New Delhi was planned as a gradual return to competition while maintaining a steady performance level.

Focus on Improving Technique

The athlete from Bihar has been working extensively on refining his technique, particularly his take-off during jumps. According to him, improving this aspect of performance could help him surpass his personal best and achieve greater heights in upcoming competitions.

Shailesh emphasised that his training is currently focused on long-term improvement rather than immediate record-breaking attempts. He believes that consistent training and proper technique will eventually lead to better performances and records.

Asian Para Games the Main Target

Shailesh Kumar has identified the upcoming Asian Para Games as his primary goal for the 2026 season. His training schedule and competition plans have been structured specifically to prepare for that event.

The athlete noted that strong competition often pushes him to perform better. He had hoped to compete against three-time Paralympic medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu, who trains with him in Bengaluru, but Thangavelu withdrew from the event due to fitness concerns.
