Sea of Marmara

Sea of Marmara

Sea of Marmara is an inland sea in Turkey. It separates Turkey’s Asian and European territories. It is connected to the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea by the Bosphorus Strait and the Dardanelles Strait respectively. It is named after the Marmara Island, Turkey’s second largest island.

This water body is currently covered by a large extent of sea snot – a mucous-like substance produced by plankton because of high quantity of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous, persistent warm temperature and calm weather. This current event originated on December last year. It has disrupted fishing in the region, damaged corals and is threatening fishes’ breeding grounds.
