Roosevelt Hotel

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has recently leased out one of its most prized possessions, the historic Roosevelt Hotel in New York. The lease agreement, signed by PIA, will last for a period of three years, bringing a significant influx of funds amidst the airline’s ongoing economic struggles.

Lease Agreement and Financial Gain

Under the lease agreement, PIA will receive a staggering $220 million. This infusion of funds will not only help the airline clear the hotel’s liabilities but also generate substantial revenue for Pakistan’s treasury. This move is seen as a prudent step to overcome the economic challenges faced by PIA, especially considering the extended closure of the hotel during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Historical Significance of the Roosevelt Hotel

The Roosevelt Hotel holds a special place in the history of New York. Constructed in 1924, the hotel’s elegant architecture and timeless charm transport visitors back to the “Roaring Twenties.” The grandeur of the building, adorned with exquisite details such as mouldings, gold trims, luxurious sofas, and majestic chandeliers, epitomizes opulence. The Palm Room, a two-story oval-shaped tea room, with its captivating mural and stunning chandelier, remains a remarkable highlight of the hotel.

Legendary Performances and Political Campaigns

The Roosevelt Hotel has witnessed numerous iconic performances and served as a significant venue for political campaigns. The legendary musician Guy Lombardo and his band, “The Royal Canadians,” captivated audiences at the Roosevelt Grill from 1929 to 1962, notably performing “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s Eve. The hotel also hosted esteemed musicians such as Jan Garber and Lawrence Welk. Additionally, notable political campaigns, including those of President Dwight B. Eisenhower and NY Mayor John Lindsay, utilized the hotel as their campaign headquarters.

On-Screen Presence and Cultural Impact

The hotel’s rich history and timeless allure have made it a sought-after location for the film and television industry. It has provided the backdrop for renowned productions like “Wall Street,” “French Connection,” “Maid in Manhattan,” and the popular TV series “Mad Men.” The association of the Roosevelt Hotel with these cultural milestones has cemented its status as an iconic symbol of New York City.

PIA’s Ownership and Past Sale Discussions

PIA acquired the Roosevelt Hotel in 2000, marking its entry into the hospitality industry. Despite occasional discussions of selling the hotel, the idea has faced significant opposition within the Pakistani political establishment. Previous attempts to sell the property were dropped due to various reasons, including the Iraq War and resistance from the Senate and Prime Minister. However, the economic challenges brought about by the pandemic have necessitated a pragmatic approach.
