RM Nachammai Becomes First Woman Chief Of Operational Nuclear Plant

RM Nachammai has created history by becoming the first woman to head the operations of a functional nuclear power plant in India under the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). She has been appointed Chief Superintendent of Kaiga Generating Station Units 3 and 4 in Karnataka, with the role taking effect from 15 March 2026. Her appointment is being viewed as a significant milestone for gender representation in India’s highly specialised nuclear energy sector.

Historic Appointment In India’s Nuclear Sector

As Chief Superintendent, Nachammai will oversee operations, maintenance and engineering support divisions of the nuclear reactor complex at Kaiga. The position involves continuous monitoring of reactor operations, safety systems and plant performance. It is regarded as one of the most technically demanding leadership roles within the nuclear power ecosystem.

The appointment is particularly significant as India seeks to strengthen its nuclear energy capacity as part of its clean energy transition. The country aims to expand nuclear power generation to around 100 gigawatts by 2047, making experienced leadership in plant operations crucial for achieving this goal.

Over Three Decades Of Nuclear Experience

Nachammai brings more than 35 years of experience in nuclear power plant operations. She is a graduate in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Madras, where she secured a university rank in 1990. She joined NPCIL in 1991 and soon distinguished herself by topping the second batch of engineer trainees, earning the prestigious Vikram Sarabhai Award.

Throughout her career, she has served in key technical and leadership roles at the Madras Atomic Power Station as well as at Kaiga Generating Station Units 1 and 2. Her work has been recognised with the NPCIL Special Contribution Award in 2010, 2014 and 2017.

Symbol Of Growing Women Participation

Her appointment comes close to International Women’s Day and carries symbolic importance for gender inclusion in the nuclear sector. In NPCIL’s workforce of nearly 10,000 employees, around 900 are women. Nachammai’s elevation to a senior operational role is therefore being seen as an important step towards encouraging more women to enter specialised engineering and energy fields.

Importance Of Kaiga Nuclear Power Station
