Republic Day Gallantry Awards Honouring Armed Forces Bravery

On the eve of the 77th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu approved gallantry awards for 70 personnel of the Indian Armed Forces. The honours recognise exceptional courage, leadership and sacrifice in diverse operational conditions. Six of the awards will be conferred posthumously. The decorations will be formally presented during the Republic Day celebrations, underscoring the nation’s tribute to military valour and service.

Gallantry Awards Approved for 2026

According to the official announcement, the list includes one Ashok Chakra, three Kirti Chakras and 13 Shaurya Chakras, including one posthumous award. In addition, one Bar to the Sena Medal (Gallantry), 44 Sena Medals (Gallantry), six Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and two Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) have been sanctioned. These awards span acts of bravery in counter-terrorism, high-risk operations and extraordinary service across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Recipients of Highest Decorations

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will receive the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, for his historic achievement as the first Indian to visit the International Space Station. The Kirti Chakra will be awarded to Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Major Arshdeep Singh and Naib Subedar Doleshwar Subba for distinguished bravery. Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been approved for the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal in recognition of exemplary leadership and service.

Shaurya Chakra and Other Honours

Thirteen personnel from elite units such as Para (Special Forces), Assam Rifles, Rashtriya Rifles and the Indian Navy will receive the Shaurya Chakra for acts of conspicuous gallantry. The awardees include officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks, reflecting operational excellence across levels. Assistant Commandant Vipin Wilson is among those recognised, highlighting the contribution of central armed police forces alongside the military.

Beyond gallantry awards, the President approved 301 military decorations, including Param Vishisht Seva Medals, Ati Vishisht Seva Medals and Yudh Seva Medals. Ninety-eight personnel were also Mentioned-in-Despatches for operations such as Operation Rakshak, Meghdoot and Rhino, as well as rescue and casualty evacuation missions across the services.
