Rare Blue-and-White Flycatcher Spotted on Gujarat’s Pavagadh Hill

A rare sighting of a male blue-and-white flycatcher has been reported from Pavagadh Hill in Gujarat, drawing attention from bird watchers and forest officials. The small migratory bird, known for its striking royal blue upperparts, black face and breast, and white belly, was photographed by a team of forest officials during a field visit to collect tree seeds in the forest area. The unexpected observation highlights the occasional appearance of rare migratory species outside their usual routes.

Accidental Discovery During Field Visit

The bird was spotted on March 8 near the Maachi area of Pavagadh Hill when forest officials, accompanied by a botany expert, were conducting fieldwork. Range Forest Officer Jayesh Dumadiya moved to a quiet spot to observe birds and noticed a blue-and-white bird drinking water nearby. Surprisingly, the bird remained calm despite human presence, allowing him to capture photographs and record videos before it flew into the dense forest.

Identification of the Rare Migratory Bird

Initially, the bird resembled local species such as the black-naped monarch or Tickell’s blue flycatcher. However, those birds usually fly away when humans approach. After examining the photographs carefully, the officials realised the bird’s markings were different. Online references and consultation with bird experts confirmed that the species was the blue-and-white flycatcher, a bird rarely recorded in India.

Migration Pattern and Global Habitat

The blue-and-white flycatcher breeds mainly in East Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China and Russia, between May and July. From August onward, the species migrates to Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It typically remains there until January before returning to its breeding grounds between February and May.

According to forest officials, the species has been recorded only about 149 times in the country. Earlier this year, a female blue-and-white flycatcher was reported in Gujarat’s Kheda district. Unlike the brightly coloured male, female birds are brownish and resemble other flycatcher species, making them harder to identify in the wild.
