R. Vairamuthu Awarded 2025 Jnanpith Honour
Renowned Tamil poet, lyricist and writer R. Vairamuthu has been selected for the 60th Jnanpith Award for the year 2025, India’s highest literary recognition. The announcement was made by Bharatiya Jnanpith in March 2026. The award honours his outstanding contribution to Tamil literature, marked by emotional depth, cultural richness and a distinctive poetic voice developed over several decades.
Recognition by Bharatiya Jnanpith
The decision was taken by the Bharatiya Jnanpith Selection Committee chaired by noted writer Pratibha Ray. The committee included eminent scholars and writers such as Madhav Kaushik, Damodar Mauzo, Suranjan Das, A. Krishna Rao, Prafulla Shiledar, Kesubhai Desai, Janaki Prasad Sharma, K. Srinivas Rao and Maheshwar. The panel recognised Vairamuthu’s enduring influence on modern Tamil writing and his ability to blend literary creativity with social reflection.
A distinguished literary journey
Born on July 13, 1953, in Tamil Nadu, Vairamuthu has remained one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Tamil literature. His writings frequently explore human emotions, rural life, environmental sensitivity and social realities. Over a literary career spanning more than four decades, he has authored more than 37 books including poetry collections, essays and novels.
Some of his notable works include “Kallikattu Ithikasam”, “Karuvachi Kaaviyam”, “Thanneer Desam” and “Moondraam Ulagapor”. These works have gained wide readership for their powerful narrative style and strong cultural grounding.
Honours across literature and cinema
Apart from his literary works, Vairamuthu has played a significant role in Tamil cinema as a lyricist. He has received the National Film Award for Best Lyrics seven times, reflecting his impact on Indian film music. His novel “Kallikattu Ithikasam” also earned the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2003.
He has previously been honoured with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014 by the Government of India. The Government of Tamil Nadu has also awarded him the Kalaimamani for his contributions to literature and the arts.
